Cycling family in NashvilleNot only is cycling an eco-friendly way to travel, it is also a great, low-impact way of staying in shape. Riding a bike is easy, and once you learn you never forget how. It’s a good muscle workout and is also great for increasing stamina, strength, and aerobic fitness.

If you’re a resident of Nashville and you enjoy cycling, you’re certainly live in the right place. The city has an extensive network of bikeways and greenways where you can enjoy cycling for leisure, for sport, or for training. There are many low-traffic neighborhoods that are perfect for comfortable cycling. These are known as “easy-riding neighborhoods.”

Biking Around Nashville

In Tennessee, greenways are considered shared-use trails. Nashville has spent considerable time and money building these trails for residents. There are over 50 miles of paved and off-street trails for use by bicyclists, walkers, and hikers, including:

The Groove. Nashville has a range of easy-riding routes called “The Groove.” These routes interconnect all the easy-riding neighborhoods within five miles of the Downtown area. Routes along The Groove are arranged in two loops with cut-throughs. The easy-riding routes make it easy to cycle, no matter what your skill level.

Music City Bikeway. Music City Bikeway is a 26.69 biking route (one way) that runs from Percy Warner Park through the downtown area to Bell Road. Along the way, cyclists can enjoy passing through McCabe Park, Shelby Bottoms Park, and Two Rivers Park. Other points of interest en route are Cheekwood Botanical Garden, Adventure Science Center, Nashville Shores, Fort Nashborough, and the State Capital building.

Nashville’s Bike-Share Initiative

Launched in December 2012, Nashville B-Cycle is a fee-based, bike-share initiative. You have the option to purchase a daily, weekly, or monthly membership. Once you get on your Red Bike, you can travel all the way from Hillsboro Village to Five Points. There are 30 B-stations along the way. You simply check your bike in and check out another if you want to continue your journey. During your membership, each trip is free providing your bike gets checked into a station within an hour. If your bike is checked out for longer than an hour, your credit card will be charged $1.50 per half hour. Nashville B-Cycle is a healthy way to get around, and if you are an annual member, it tracks your mileage and calories burned as well as the carbon offset of each of your trips.
